Why is there a need for heating oil?

There are over 3.6 million homes in the UK that are not connected to the gas main networks, and have to rely on other forms of energy to heat their homes. Be it through liquid petroleum gas (LPG), electricity, renewable technologies or home heating oil; these domestic properties depend on these alternative methods to power their heating every day.

So what’s so good about using Home Heating Oil?

Home Heating Oil (also known as Kerosene, 28 sec, boiler fuel etc) is a very efficient fuel. With a modern oil system that maximises energy use ratings of up to 95% efficiency can be achieved. A few more positive properties include the following:

Viscosity – It is unlikely to ‘wax up’ in cold weather until a temperature of around -39 degrees is reached (‘waxing up’ meaning that crystals form which stop the fuel from flowing as easily)

Eco-Efficiency – It is a light and clean burning fuel which gives off a low soot flame, which means lower emissions and a cheaper cost (cheaper cost as the lighter fuels distilled from crude oil are cheaper than the heavier fuels like diesel)

Accessibility – It is the most common type used in homes in the UK, and is easily acquired via distributors for great value prices (Top Up being one!). You are free to keep your tank on your property which means an element of control can always be had with ensuring the tank is kept full

Fuel Efficiency – It has a relatively low burning time with a high heat output, which means a longer burn with a more intense flame makes a more efficient heating system

Cost Efficiency -You only pay for the oil that you use, and running a system on oil once already set up can have savings of up to £1000 in bills over a five to seven year period (Source: OFTEC.)

Safety – Most modern oil boilers now utilise valves that automatically engage in the risk/event of a fire; this helps to prevent any chances of spreading to the main supply. Also being stocked with Kerosene is a plus as it is not highly flammable at room temperatures like natural gas or Liquid petroleum gas (LPG).

So, If the above is enough to convince you to switch to heating oil, to give your boiler or tank systems an update to maximise cost efficiencies, or you’d just like to maximise your existing oil usage – give Top Up a call on 0203 0111 232 for a friendly chat and to find out more.
